A travel eSIM replaces the local SIM card you used to buy at the airport. You install a data plan on your phone before you leave, and it connects to a partner network when you land. Airalo is one of the best-known sellers of plans like this, and its promo codes are listed on Vouchvio. A code takes a few percent or a few dollars off; choosing the wrong plan can cost far more. Here is what to check, in the order it matters.
1. Can your phone use an eSIM?
This is the step that ends most problems before they start. Your phone needs two things:
- eSIM support. Most iPhones from the XS onwards support eSIM, as do recent Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy flagships, but many mid-range and older Android phones do not. On iPhone, look for "Add eSIM" under Settings → Mobile/Cellular. On Android, look for an option to add an eSIM or download a SIM under the network or SIM settings.
- No carrier lock. A phone locked to your home operator will refuse to install another provider's eSIM. Phones bought outright are usually unlocked; phones on contract may not be. Your operator can tell you, and can usually unlock it.
If either check fails, no plan will work, and an installed eSIM is usually not refundable.
2. Match the coverage to your whole route
Plans are sold for a single country, a region (for example Europe or Asia) or globally. A single-country plan is usually cheapest per gigabyte, but if your trip crosses borders, one regional plan is often cheaper and simpler than several country plans. Check that every country on your route — including airport connections — appears on the plan's coverage list, and which local network the plan uses there.
3. Choose data and validity together
Each plan has a data allowance and a validity period. The validity normally starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy it, so you can buy before you travel. Unused data does not carry over when the period ends.
A rough guide for typical use: maps, messaging and occasional browsing use around 0.5–1 GB a day; video calls and streaming use much more. If you are unsure, a smaller plan that can be topped up is better value than a large one you do not finish.
4. Data only, or a phone number too?
Most travel eSIMs are data-only. You can still use messaging and calling apps over data, and you can keep your home SIM active for texts such as bank verification codes, but you will not have a local number. Some plans include a number for calls and texts; they cost more. Decide whether you actually need one.
5. Install before you leave
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi, but leave it switched off until you arrive. On arrival, switch mobile data to the travel eSIM and turn on data roaming for that line — the eSIM is technically roaming on a partner network, and it will not connect with roaming off. Turn data roaming off for your home SIM so your home operator does not charge you.
Where promo codes fit
eSIM codes are usually a percentage off a first purchase or a fixed amount off a plan above a minimum price. They apply to the plan price at checkout, and some are limited to new accounts. On a plan that costs a few dollars, a code saves cents; on a long regional or global plan, it is worth applying. Airalo also runs a credit system for repeat customers, which typically cannot be combined with a promo code on the same order.
